Seahorse Smoking Set

78.00

A whimsical art deco smoking set. Comprised of an ashtray, a box lined with metal, and a hollow container adorned with a seahorse. The original purpose of each component is not definitively known - the seahorse container may have been intended as a pipe holder or as a loose tobacco dispenser. The box fits standard cigarettes (tested with American Spirits) but may also be meant for rolling papers.

The box is lined with what looks like copper - smoking boxes and cabinets during the art deco period that were meant for storing cigars were lined in copper (it retained humidity) and/or tin because the materials protected against mold and mildew.

It looks as though there may have been a third component at some point, perhaps for matches, that has been lost in time. Very old vintage item - has aged accordingly.

8.75” wide. 5.75” wide. 4.375” tall.
Seahorse dispenser - approximately 2” x 1.25” wide. 3.5” tall.
Box - approximately 2.5” x 3.625” wide. 1.375” deep.
